Petunia seeds are tiny, but seeds of elite strains are often sold in pelleted form, which makes them easier to handle. Tiny petunia seedlings need ten weeks to grow to transplanting size. When the plants start regrowing in spring, you can root 4-inch long (10cm) stems in moist seed starting mix to quickly increase your supply of plants. ![]() In mild winter climates, container-grown plants of these and other premium petunias can be trimmed back to 6 inches (15cm) in autumn, and held through winter in a semi-dormant state in an unheated garage or other protected space where they will not freeze. The same is true of ‘Kabloom’ calibrachoa, a hugely popular mini-petunia for containers. The seeds are not cheap, but neither are the plants, which makes them well worth growing from seed. I am especially fond of the ‘ Silver Tidal Wave’ variety, an All-America Selections winner from 2002, because it goes with everything and has noticeable evening fragrance. Super-vigorous ‘Wave’ petunias will form billowing clouds or carpets of color when kept fed and watered. There is much to love about heavy-blooming ‘Wave’ petunias, except perhaps their price. Image courtesy of All-America Selections Pricey Premium Petunias ‘Evening Scentsation’ is the perfect container plant for outdoor living areas. Expect no aroma during the early hours of the day, because petunias have strong circadian rhythms. If you are looking for fragrant petunias in other colors, the best strategy is to visit a garden center in the evening and give various selections a sniff. This is not the case with lilac blue ‘Evening Scentsation’, which is reliably fragrant during late afternoon and evening, and is best grown in pots stationed at nose level. Indigenous South American people thought the scent of petunias helped ward off evil spirits, and I agree that catching a sniff of the flowers’ sweet floral perfume feels like a blessing.įor years flower breeders placed priority on petunia color, such that many of today’s showiest petunias are fragrant only by accident. Petunias emit fragrance at dusk to attract the attention of night-flying moths, their preferred pollinators. The hundred-year-old ‘Balcony’ variety has a similar upright growth habit, which becomes more relaxed and vinelike as the plants age. ![]() Growing to 24 inches (61cm) tall, the rangy plants continue to bloom well into fall, and shed a generous crop of seeds. I first saw ‘ Old Fashioned Vining’ petunia in a church garden where it had grown for years. Heirloom ‘Old Fashioned Vining’ petunia tolerates cold and heat, and is a willing reseeder. ![]() Several wild species were intensely hybridized for decades, resulting in two heirloom petunia varieties developed a century ago that are still available today. Backyard gardeners loved how the pest-resistant flowers perfumed the evening air, which won the coarse, sticky plants a place in many dooryard gardens. The parent species of modern petunias are native to South America, and were introduced to the gardening world in the 1820s. I use the same fluorescent fixture I will use later in the spring for starting tomatoes. The tiny seeds are strong germinators, but the seedlings need a long head start, as in 10 weeks from seed to transplanting. I love picking up a few plants that catch my eye at the garden center in spring, but it’s also fun to grow uncommon petunias from seed. Long-blooming, deer-resistant, and available in almost every color, petunias are the most popular bedding plant in the world. ![]()

Amazing Stories of Life After Death Jim Anderson: Heaven Can Wait ![]() ![]() ![]() With guitars it all depends on the kind of part you’ve recorded. To show you how this works, I’ll break it down with some common instruments/audio – now with added audio clip amazingness! In Garageband the compressor comes with many contextual presets that can come close to sounding half decent and make for a great starting point to work from. When it comes to your sounds, experimentation is key, but before you spend a lot of your time figuring out individual compressor settings from scratch check out the supplied Compression pre sets. With Jazz music however, dynamics are usually preserved as much as possible to capture and convey every nuance of a performance. Subtle dynamics simply aren’t as important as overall volume is. In pop music nowadays there is a lot of compression, on pretty much everything. Simple as that.Īs I said earlier, the amount of compression required varies and depends largely on what instrument or sound you have recorded and what genre or style you are working in. The best way to fix a bad take? – re-record a better one. You’ll end up with something that sounds lackluster and squashed – not good. Over compressing a less than stellar performance won’t magically make it sound great. “As wonderful as that acoustic guitar part is that I’ve just recorded ( and taken 2 hours to play right….), it will sound even better when I squash the life out of it!”Įverything sounded flat, lifeless and very UN-dynamic.Īlso, I quickly found out that compression doesn’t actually fix anything in your audio. “It doesn’t matter how clipped and sloppy that vocal track is – the compressor will fix it” I thought. When I first started out with Garageband and discovered compression, I jumped in headfirst and compressed absolutely everything – whether it needed it or not. You’ll see the Garageband Compressor in action on a variety of different instruments. You do this by – you guessed it – increasing the gain.Ĭheck out the video below. Once this has happened, you need to boost the output level to make up for the lost volume. Remember that compression reduces loud sounds down to the same volume as the quieter sounds. Snare drums, Kick drums and certain vocals (hip hop/rap) all traditionally have a fast attack setting, whereas pianos, guitars and other instruments where preserving the dynamics and the need to sound natural are important, generally have a slower attack speed. How much attack you use depends entirely on what it is that you’re compressing. The Attack governs the speed at which compression kicks in. If you select a ratio of 30:1, the volume will be reduced by 30db for every 1 db over your threshold setting (and sound majorly squashed)! So for example, if you select a ratio of 2:1 for every 1db that your audio goes over your threshold setting, it’s volume will be reduced by 2db. The higher the ratio, the more volume is reduced and squished, while a lower ratio will reduce less volume. The ratio determines how much volume to reduce. Any sound above this db level will be compressed.ĭo you only want the louder sounds to be compressed? Or do you really want to ‘level out’ your sound by setting the threshold at a lower volume? When you click on and move the slider it displays a decibel (db) level. ![]() The threshold controls the point at which the compression kicks in. In typical Garageband style, the built in compressor is intuitive and really simple to use. One of the main things to watch out for is that you don’t over compress and leave your audio sounding squashed or lifeless. You wouldn’t want to use the same compressor settings on a dub-step synth track as you would on a jazz flute one for instance, or the same set up on a vocal track as you would on a snare drum track. How much compression you use depends on what type of audio you are applying it to and what genre your music is. ![]() You can then raise the overall gain of the track, having reduced any peaks or troughs in the volume. Put simply, applying compression to a track in Garageband lowers the volume of loud sounds to the same level as the quieter sounds. In this Garageband tutorial we’ll answer all these questions, plus we’ll watch the compressor in action as well as listen to several audio samples so you can hear the effects for yourself. So what exactly is a compressor? How does it work in Garageband? What does it sound like? ![]() Initially not the most mind blowing effect in your plug in arsenal perhaps – when used properly the Compressor is definitely one of the most useful. If you want to get your audio sounding anywhere close to professional, learning how to use the compressor needs to be pretty high on your to do list. I would definitely recommend this phone to someone who is not a phone snob, but who would appreciate a quality phone at the right price. Best thing about it? It's only $250-300, unlocked. The high points are basically everything else: it's fast and smooth, the screen is bright (but could be better in direct sun), the camera shoots 4K video, and some of the ZenUI apps are actually useful. BMW says those advantages were good for 40 extra miles on the European test cycle. For reference, the sleek Tesla Model 3 is at 0.23. It also tapered the glass house, closed off the underbody, added lower air flaps, those flush door handles and slim mirrors and came out with a drag coefficient of 0.25.
